SWEETNESS!!!
Phillies 6, Nationals 1
Marlins 8, Mets 1

Phillies win the NL East.

All the agita, all the hours spent looking at this monitor or writing on TGP or BSG, all the aggravation my wife has had to suffer... right now, it's every bit worth it.

WE WIN!!!

I've been waiting a long time for this. Just wish more of our friends--mvpsoft/Dave Snyder of philliesphans.com, Jeff Lamana of phila[hans.com, Tacony Lou of the I Love Misery Phillies blog--were with us to see it, and hoping that wherever they are, they're celebrating too.

How did that happen, anyway? How did the Phils go 13-4 while the Mets went 5-12 against mostly bad competition? I'm not really sure at this point. Part of the answer seems to be that Jose Reyes had a terrible final two months. But I think it was BP that had a chart of September performances and there wasn't a Phillie with an OPS over .990, while I think there were at least two Mets, including Alou - which should have made up for Reyes going to pieces.

The number that shocked me was the Mets scoring 5.8 runs a game during their "collapse." That's damn good hitting. Remember that their playoff odds, per Baseball Prospectus, were something like 98 percent even as late as Sept. 23 or so.

It was really their bullpen. I can think of at least three games in which they blew large leads--4-0, 5-0, 6-1--to the Nationals or Marlins. Of course the Phils did that too, a few times, but their timing was evidently a lot better.

After a long and at times improbable swim, the Great White Shark that is the Yankees slowly wades in to the shallow cove that is the playoffs. The Cove is filled with barracudas, sharks, rays, eels; all types of nasty little creatures, fast and deadly. The Great White Shark that is the Yankees grins knowingly, showing a murderous row of teeth; some old and hanging on for one last bite before falling off, some newly emerged and eager for their first taste of prey.

The Great White Shark that is the Yankees, is home…

New motto: "Return the throne to an American Dynasty". Also works for the Hillary campaign.

Non-sequitur:
Much better name for "googly-eyes" (dawned randomly and much too late during recent bender): Hypno-Toad
